MY WORK AND CAREER EXPERIENCE

I currently live in Bristol, Connecticut where I work for ESPN sports network as a television technician. I have been at ESPN since 1997. However, I worked in television on the local level before that. Below is an in-depth description of my television experience. To view my actual resumé (in PDF format), click here. I attended Broome Community College (part of the SUNY college system) in Binghamton, New York. I took classes in video and audio production and received my AS in science.

Channel 34 (WMGC/WIVT) - Binghamton, New York (12/93 - 4/96)

Just prior to my last semester in school, I was hired to work as a master control operator at Channel 34, an ABC affiliate in Binghamton. In that position, I was responsible for switching between programming and local commercials, recording show feeds as well as monitoring and controlling the transmitter output. I also acted as a substitute technical director for news and occasionally served as a news photographer. Later, I was promoted to Creative Services Director and became a one-person commercial production department. It required me to meet with commercial sales clients in addition to writing, producing, shooting and editing commercial spots. Other responsibilities included setting up the studio for special programming shoots, building temporary sets and assisting the promotions department.

Channel 18 (WETM) - Elmira, New York (4/96 - 2/97)

From that position, I was hired to work in the Binghamton bureau of Channel 18, an NBC affiliate in Elmira, NY. I worked there as a news photographer, editor and studio camera operator. I was the sole photographer for the bureau and worked with a single reporter.

Our first night in operation, we were the first crew on the scene of a brutal murder. This event later became New York's second death penalty case since it was reinstated. I was able to use my local contacts to obtain information no other station had and we interviewed people that had left the scene by the time other crews arrived. Within the first month, word of mouth advertising (mostly through the logo on our truck), allowed the station to receive a number two rating during its first sweeps in the Binghamton market. This was quite a feat considering, at the time, the station was only available on cable in a market with many over the air viewers.

Later, I joined the crew of the station's new morning show. Not only was I the only news photographer and editor for that show, I was the only studio camera operator. This required me to operate two studio cameras across three sets. Needless to say, I never stopped moving during the show. On a few occasions, I operated the Chyron and audio board for news cut ins after the morning show.

ESPN Sport Network - Bristol, Connecticut (2/97 - Present)

In February of 1997, I received the opportunity to work for ESPN. Over the years, I have performed in many areas. I started out as an editor, creating highlights and features for shows on both ESPN and ESPN2. Later, I began to also operate studio camera for shows like Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight, and several shows on ESPN2. A few years later, I moved to the ESPNews network. In addition to editing and the familiar master control, I began performing tasks such as tape and Profile operation, stillstore, video shading and robotic camera control. I was also actively involved with installing equipment for ESPN's ongoing transition to non-linear and high definition equipment. With the need for additional editors, I have since moved back to the editing group. This move has allowed me to expand my knowledge with non-linear editing with the Quantel edit system.

Equipment Experience

My varied operation experience has exposed me to a great deal of equipment, all of which I was required to master. I have operated equipment under many conditions, from offline to fully live. In some cases, it has been necessary to operate malfunctioning equipment, something that usually requires creative workarounds.

In editing, I am skilled in cuts, 910, 2000 (both analog and fully digital versions) and 9100 linear systems, as well as Quantel's QEdit Pro and EQ non-linear high definition editing systems. I have operated with 1", U-matic 3/4", Betacam SP and digital Betacam and can read and adjust video levels using both analog and digital waveform monitors and vectorscopes. I have experience using several DVE processors, including Grass Valley's DPM 700 and DVEous/GVEous systems and Pinnacle System's DVExtreme.

I have used several analog and digital Grass Valley and SONY switchers for production, master control and editing. I also have experience with ProBel's broadcast automation system and switcher. In master control, I have operated several commercial playback systems, including Solutek, Betacart, Sony STAS and ProBel.

In tape operation, I have used digital betacam for playback and recording as well as pre-read show edits. I am also skilled with Grass Valley's 8-channel Profile XP digital video system.

I have in-depth experience with the Pinnacle Lightning 3-channel stillstore. In addition to saving and recalling stills, I have experience in changing key signals and building graphics directly on the system.

My studio camera experience is with both standard cameras (on either dollies or pneumatic pedestals) and TSM's robotic camera control system. Additionally, I am experienced at shading cameras and controlling studio lighting.

Additional Skills

In addition to knowledge gained on the job, I have many useful personal skills. Some of these skills have aided me in my professional work.

Web publishing is a hobby that I enjoy outside of work. I have created sites for myself and others and even designed the ESPNews staff Intranet page. Here is a list of some of the sites I have created:

- GadgetFAQs.com - This is an electronics help site I am building, containing information about computers, home audio and home video.

- nobowl.com - This is a site I created for the bowling league I participate in each Fall.

- bowell.net - I am currently building this history and information site for members of my family.

- The ESPNews Staff Intranet page - I was responsible for the design of a staff information page for members of the ESPNews crew. The sample here is a non-working image of the main page as the actual site is not publicly accessible.

In addition to web publishing, I am skilled in computers I own computers using both Windows and Macintosh OS and have even explored Linux. I have even built computers for myself, including the web server that is delivering this page to you. I also have experience troubleshooting both hardware and software. Some notable software in which I am knowledgeable:

- Microsoft Office 97-2003

- Adobe Photoshop 4.7 - 9.0(CS2)

- Adobe GoLive 5.0 - 7.0(CS)

- Adobe Pagemaker 2.0 - 6.5

- Macromedia Dreamweaver MX

- Macromedia Flash MX

- Procreate Painter 7

- Video editing software including Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle Studio and Ulead Video Studio

Related to both web publishing and computers, I enjoy creating graphics and working with digital photos. I personally created all the graphics on the sites listed above. I have created other graphics and artwork as well. Samples of this work can be found here.

Another important skill is photography. Shooting on film before shooting on video gave me an eye composition and lighting. Being a still photographer was a great help in making the jump to video photographer. In addition, I enjoy processing my own photographs in both my home darkroom and digitally through my computer. You can view samples of my photography here.
